Reaching the climax of Baldur's Gate 3 presents players with one of the most morally complex choices in modern role-playing games. Deciding whether to free Prince Orpheus fundamentally alters the fate of your companions, the Githyanki race, and the final battle against the Netherbrain.

Acquiring the Tools to Break the Chains

Unlocking the barrier surrounding Prince Orpheus requires a special legendary weapon known as the Orphic Hammer. Players can obtain this item by making a dangerous bargain with Raphael or by infiltrating his domain, the House of Hope. Taking the hammer from the House of Hope triggers one of the most challenging boss encounters in Act 3.

If you arrive at the Astral Plane without the hammer, your options become severely limited. Without the means to shatter the binding crystals, you will be forced to align with the Emperor. Planning ahead during Act 3 is essential if you wish to keep your narrative paths open.

Consequences of Releasing Prince Orpheus

Choosing to free Orpheus immediately shatters your alliance with the Emperor. Viewing the act as betrayal, the mind flayer abandons your group to join the forces of the Netherbrain. This turns your former protector into an enemy you must face during the final confrontation.

Despite his imprisonment, Orpheus recognizes the existential threat posed by the Netherbrain and agrees to ally with you. However, a major sacrifice remains necessary because a mind flayer is still required to wield the Netherstones effectively. Either your protagonist, Karlach, or Orpheus himself must undergo ceremorphosis to save Faerûn.

Siding with the Emperor Instead

If you decide against freeing the Githyanki prince, the Emperor consumes Orpheus's brain to assimilate his power. This allows the Emperor to control the Netherstones directly without forcing your party members to transform into mind flayers. The Emperor remains a loyal follower in your active lineup through the final battle.

However, this path severely impacts the future of the Githyanki people. Without Orpheus to challenge the tyrant Vlaakith, his followers remain trapped under her oppressive rule. While Lae'zel can be persuaded to remain in your party, siding with the Emperor damages her long-held dream of liberating her nation.

Which Path Offers the Best Narrative Resolution

Determining the best outcome depends heavily on your character's values and personal motivations. Releasing Orpheus and allowing Karlach or Orpheus to transform provides a triumphant ending for Lae'zel and the Githyanki resistance. It resolves long-standing political storylines while keeping your main character human.

Conversely, trusting the Emperor avoids risking your party's humanity and simplifies the final assault. Both choices feature significant trade-offs, ensuring that no single decision feels entirely without loss. Your decision ultimately reflects what price your hero is willing to pay to save Baldur's Gate.
